Animal Caretaker

The Animal Caretaker will be responsible for the daily cleaning, feeding, and care of assigned research animals.

Pay Range: $18 – $21 per hour, eligible for paid overtime.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1year relevant work experience handling, feeding, and general animal husbandry duties.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, experience and/or skills may be considered.
  • Familiarity with the operation and maintenance procedures for animal cage and rack washing equipment is helpful.
  • Willing to work a rotating schedule that will include after hours, weekends and holiday coverage.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 

  • You will be responsible for the daily cleaning, feeding, and handling of laboratory animals.
  • Handle periodic rotation of animals to clean cages, cleaning and sanitization of animal housing rooms.
  • Handle the operation/maintenance of cage washing equipment and operate the electric pallet jack and manual pallet jack.
  • Perform routine and simple laboratory activities, including the cleaning and maintenance of equipment and facilities.
  • Assist the technical and professional staff as needed with physical examinations, obtaining body weights, or other testing procedures of laboratory animals.
  • Maintain food and bedding inventories, and supplies. Learn and apply correct laboratory procedures.
  • Develop an understanding and knowledge of both experimental procedures and research project activities.
  • Apply and demonstrates this understanding and knowledge in laboratory work. Communicates effectively.
  • Comply with security procedures in the performance of duties.
  • Demonstrate problem-solving ability by taking initiative to handle basic issues autonomously and working with team members for the more complex issues to support animal care operations.
  • You will work in compliance with all local, federal, GLP, FDA, AAALAC, and USDA regulations.
  • Apply attention to detail to provide excellent animal welfare.
  • Exhibit strong communication skills with internal staff and external contacts.
  • May be required to perform other related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Lift 50 pounds: Frequently, 4-8 hours
  • Stand, walk: Frequently, 1-8 hours
  • Pushing, pulling, squatting, stooping, and bending: Frequently, 1-8 hours
